Perseid night: a night of shooting stars at Lunina dolina

On Wednesday, 12 August 2026, the sky above Destrnik opens into one of the finest sights of the year. We invite you to watch the shooting stars together by the yurt at Lunina dolina — no screens, no rushing. Just a blanket, a warm drink from a flask, and a sky that slowly opens up.

Mid-August is the time of the Perseids, the most generous meteor shower of the year. On a good night you can see several dozen meteors an hour with the naked eye. No telescope is needed — only a dark sky and enough patience for your eyes to adjust to the darkness.

Who knows, perhaps a roe deer or a brown hare will drop by as well — both cross our farm regularly.

When and where

  • Date: Wednesday, 12 August 2026
  • Gathering: between 20.30 and 21.00 — sunset in Destrnik is around 20.25
  • Observing: from 20.30/21.00 until 23.30
  • Place: Destrnik, Lunina dolina
  • Meeting point: we send the exact location to those registered on the day of the event, by email and phone
  • Registration: required, by Tuesday 11 August, 12.00
  • Places: 40 (the original 20 plus 20 more) — we select participants from those registered and let everyone who registered know on Tuesday evening

How the evening unfolds

We gather before dark, as the sun drops behind the horizon and the valley settles. We find a spot on the meadow by the yurt, make ourselves comfortable and wait for the sky to darken. When the first stars appear we turn off the lights and let our eyes adjust to the dark — that is when the real watching begins.

There is no hurry. Some will lie quietly, others will talk softly. We wind the evening down at around 23.30.

Food and drink

From your own rucksack. We recommend bringing drinks and snacks — warm tea in a flask is always a good idea on an August night.

What we suggest you bring

  • Something to sit on: we have a few stools, but we recommend bringing your own, along with a mat or a cushion.
  • Warm clothing: dress comfortably and for the weather — it will be around 18 °C in the evening.
  • Water and snacks for in between.
  • A rubbish bag: we take any packaging and other waste home with us.
  • A calm mind: let us relax and enjoy the nature and the starry sky.

How registration works

The meadow by the yurt has room for 40 people — enough for the night to stay quiet and for everyone to find their own piece of sky. Because experience tells us more people register than there are places, registering is not the same as a confirmed place: it puts you on the list. We extended the capacity from 20 places to 40.

We accept registrations until Tuesday 11 August, 12.00. We then select the participants from those registered and email every single person who registered on Tuesday evening — including those who did not make it this time, so that everyone knows where they stand. Those selected receive the exact meeting point in the same message.

Please note: the registration form for this event ran on the Slovene page and is now closed. Do write to us if you have questions about future observing evenings.

One more thing

The event depends on the weather. If the sky is completely overcast we will let you know about a postponement or cancellation by the email and phone number you give when registering.

For further questions you can reach us at info@lunina-dolina.si or 070 620 382.

Come along, watch, unwind and enjoy the magic of the sky.
